Orbweaver – Strange Transmissions from the Neuralnomicon [Review]

Orbweaver – Strange Transmissions from the Neuralnomicon

Wow. Damn near nothing about this band exists on any ov the news sites I frequent, so I had no idea what I was in store for when I plugged this gem in and turned the volume to max. Yeah, I often love to live dangerously. And damn was this a bit over the edge than what my ears were prepared for! But don’t misunderstand: it isn’t a bad thing. It’s just . . . something that dares you to define it and defies you and your feeble definitions to the end ov the earth! Herein is what I’m talking about.

Be warned: when logos try to make you hallucinate, shit is about to get real!

It opens up almost as a noise / death metal band in its construction with the track Xoxotic. There are so many things besieging the listener all at once that it’s hard to take it all in. The guitars are crunchy yet fluid and smooth, ever-changing much as one would picture electricity if it was a style ov music. And the vocals are bellowed, guttural, and cookie-monstery, yet retain the same tenets and timber as that ov black metal vocals. And then it just leaves you feeling aghast as your slow-moving mind tries to comprehend it. And this is the crazy part: this track is simply an intro!

Those ov Non-Being opens up with not more than fluid, flanged synth before annihilating the listener in a pseudo-grindcore-esque barrage ov furious riffing and blast-beats before descending back into its den ov iniquity with more flanged synth and guitarwork. It is chaotic yet serene, filling whatever container it has in front ov it yet retaining none ov the qualities the container has, much like water. The percussion is technical and precise, the overture ov a master drummer! Fluid, serene and retaining pure and absolute chaos as the guitars come and go, capricious as the wind itself. Perchance this is what the future holds for true fans ov progressive metal? And yet, before I know it, the track leads me to the third installment ov this album, entitled Crystal Prisms. Fuck, are these guys simply expressing themselves through the various elements that compose our natural world?!

It hurts so fucking good to have my ears raped by the elements!!

After leading into the third track, I decided to swallow my pride and type in “Orbweaver” into the search engine on facebook and it was the first band that popped up. And they describe their music best: “Deranged psychedelic death metal hurdling through space at speeds that make The Millennium Falcon look like your little sister’s moped.” I can’t stress enough how honest they’re being when they wrote that! This band just says “Fuck ears that are weak and unworthy! We’re here to blow minds!” Recommended for fans ov progressive, psychedelic, and unyielding death metal in the vein ov the future!
